January 5, 2022- White Cay

January 5, 2022
4:00am- Early start to a long day. Heading to White Cay, an island in the Berry Islands.
6:30am- After Steve ate his bagel with cream cheese, he put out a fishing line.
It was starting to get light out. Watching the sun rise  is my favourite part about night motoring.  You realize no matter what is happening in your life, the sun rises and sets. It is very calming to watch.
It was cloudy as we covered 15.5 miles so far.

Just before the sunrise, we put up our sail and within 10 minutes, the starboard line untied from the sail. We slowed down and retied it within 5 minutes.
7:15am- We got a little excited. A fish nibbled on our line but no bites.
7:45am- The captain needed a rest and left the helm to his first and only mate.
8:45am- As I was keeping watch, I saw a whale spouting about 5times. So exciting.
9:45am- Just heard the Coast Guard on the VHF radio that a small aircraft went in the water and there were two passengers. One person was bleeding from the head and were rushing him to the hospital.
11:30am-  I managed to surprise Steve with grilled cheese and dill pickles for lunch.
12:00pm- The Celebrity Millennium cruise ship just passed us.
At 1pm, we went by 3 Carribean cruise ships which were docked on their private island.

1:45pm-  Disappointedly Steve caught a Barracuda. No fish to eat tonight.

We probably only motored sail a couple of hour and had to motor most of the way since the wind was east north east.
4:00pm-  We covered 72 miles and anchored at White Cay. Nice and calm.
Sausage on a bun with bean salsa for dinner tonight. Leaving around 7am tomorrow heading for Rose Island across from Nassau.
We won’t be leaving until 7am tomorrow. Watched a couple of series the went to bed.
9:00 pm-  we were snuggled in our bed when all of a sudden we heard a big rattle. We both jumped out of bed in a hurry and rushed outside. I was imagining our anchor dragged and our boat was scraping on the island.  Steve has this great strong rechargeable headlamp and was assessing the situation while I put on the navigation system to look at our depth. We weee in 10 ft of water which was fine since we draw 5”4’. Steve wanted to make sure the anchor took since it was a hard bottom. After 1/2 hour, we realize everything was fine. We figure with the current of the tides going out that the chain of the anchor settled. It is amazing how you actually hear and feel the tide coming in and out. I put Raymarine View on my iPhone and would look at the depth of the water periodically. You never know.
